Developer version of the XPS series which is one of Dell’s highest performance laptop series now ships with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS pre-installed. Which means 100% compatibility with systems drivers and compatible peripheral. Since it is LTS it is guaranteed that Canonical will provide updates up-to 5 years.  This will be a great new for developers/ engineers who are passionate about Linux and willing to use powerful, high end and portable (around 1.2Kg) laptop in day to day life.

All the laptops are powered by 8th Generation Intel® processors. Based on 14nm node and more physical cores. The advantage is clearly highlighted in recent benchmarks. So It is clear that the XPS 13 developer edition will benefit from the better CPU performance as well as longer battery life, Just due to the processor upgrade itself.

Storage ranges from 128GB to 2TB SSD which can be customized based on the buyer preference. RAM capacity ranges from 4GB to 16GB. All the models in the series comes with Intel® UHD 620 graphics card. Display density varies from full HD to ultra HD. Backed with a platinum silver colored silver magnesium lid (thinnest in its class) and carbon fiber palm-rest make it truly a high-end laptop.

Prices start at $949.99 as listed in Dell’s official web site for US.

According to Ubuntu’s official blog, This is the first OEM partnership with a major vendor since Ubuntu 18.04 LTS launch in April 2018. Also that it is a known fact that Dell has been working closely with Canonical since Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin). The collaboration called Project Sputnik. However the best is yet to come. Sputnik team is willing to ship

  • Dell Precision 7730 Mobile Workstation, developer edition

with RHEL certified Ubuntu 18.04 LTS soon. (source) . And they are planning to release their 5th release in 2020.

Ubuntu 18.08 features lots of improvements including going back to GNOME desktop from Unity. This is once of a most wanted change as I believe.

However the Developer edition only available in US as of Jul 2018, It will soon available for the rest of the world soon.
